What is Back2Strength Chiropractic?

Back2Strength aims to continue to maintain and further establish a Chiropractic service of excellence and to provide the public with friendly leading edge health care. For over three years I have been working in association with the Wymondham Chiropractic Clinic in Norfolk. I am a member of the Scottish Chiropractic Association and registered with the General Chiropractic Council.

The holistic healing philosophy of Back2Strength Chiropractic draws from many different health disciplines as diverse as Chiropractic, Applied Kinesiology (AK), nutrition, spinal rehabilitation, diagnostic acupuncture, certain aspects of dentistry and environmental medicine.

Paramount is a dedication to care for each patient individually and to provide a natural, safe and effective service that focuses on health as a whole rather than just treating symptoms of ill-health.

Most patients consult me for the diagnosis, treatment and management of acute and chronic painful conditions of the spine and extremities, i.e. sprains and strains in their various forms. I specialise in pain relief, injury management and in assessing and establishing optimum health.

This highly individual service will enable and continue to support patients to understand, choose and realise a healthy lifestyle offering a deep, lasting sense of wellbeing. Each patient's progress is monitored closely to assure maintenance of improvement and relief, and to help optimise the client's health.

Breakthrough: American back pain guidelines recognise spinal manipulation as first line treatment for back pain

New clinical guidelines in the management of lower back pain have been prepared by the American College of Physicians and the American Pain Society in November 2007.

The findings of the expert panel are in accordance with the UK's Royal College of GPs guidelines on back pain and the European Back Pain Guidelines. All acknowledge the important role of spinal manipulation in reducing acute and chronic pain and helping speed recovery.

The following are important implications of the study:

  • The results have been published in the prestigious Annals of Internal Medicine and will strongly influence the opinions of medical practitioners in the USA and internationally alike.
  • The guidelines are from a panel of medical experts as opposed to a multidisciplinary group including chiropractors and appreciate spinal manipulation as a safe option of proven value for first line care for the acute back patient.
  • Clinicians are encouraged to refer to skilled and experienced practitioners of spinal manipulation.
  • The evidence for manipulation is at least as strong as for best medical care, any drug therapy, and any other, non-drug approach.
  • For patients who do not improve with self-care options, clinicians should consider the addition of nonpharmacological therapy with proven benefits - for acute low back pain, spinal manipulation; for chronic or subacute low back pain, intensive intercplinary rehabilitation, exercise therapy acupuncture, massage therapy, spinal manipulation yoga, cognitive behavioral therapy, or progressive relaxation.

You can view or download the whole paper here and you can also find a summary for patients.

Comment:

The implementation of these new guidelines illustrates nicely that despite a perceived conflict between the medical and chiroractic profession until one generation ago things have been improving steadily. Recent research since the 1990 helped us understand back pain and its resulting disability better. Looking at the evidence from clinical trials, reviews and current guidelines the best way to tackle spinal pain is to embrace a broad spectrum of proven health therapies with spinal manipulation at the forefront and with a strong emphasis on self-help and rehabilitation exercises.
